Why are homemade electronics called “homebrew”?
As a homebrewer (the one that makes beer-homebrew), this absolutely makes no sense. I dont call my beer “home-soldered or home-programmed”.
Wow, you two opened my eyes that maybe it isnt so bad that we share the same name. I cant pick between the two of you who should get best answer.
My guess would be that the term started being used because of the legal restrictions on both. Brewing beer at home historically (and in some places, still) is subject to many laws. Although it’s more of an accepted hobby now, there were times when brewing at home was very much an example of going around the law to get the results you wanted anyways. Possibly your reasoning could be anything from preferring a specific quality to doing it solely based on the belief that you should be able to (almost as a form of protest).
I’ve done some digging around about homebrew programming, and here’s something that stuck out to me in a blog I found:
“Homebrew, as related to this article, refers to software applications and video games created by consumers for use on proprietary hardware consoles that don’t typically allow user created content to run on them.”
Seeing that made me think that it’s probably the act of going around the regulations and laws regarding who is allowed to create the content that caused the programmers to see a similarity and nickname what they’re doing “homebrewing” content for the consoles.
This is all just an educated guess with the information I’ve found, but it seems to make sense.
Edit: Flavor, you rock. I think together we teamed up to figure out the answer. I’m not a brewer myself so I just made the best guess with the info I could find online.
