Bagpipe blowing problems?
Hi, I have just progressed to the Great Highland Bagpipes from the practice chanter, however when i blow into the blowpipe my lips eventually lose the tight seal they have and I cant blow into the bag properly without that tight seal as any piper will know. Is this a normal problem or am I doing something wrong ?
It’s a normal problem with beginners. I would have you cork off your drones at first and ensure you have a fairly light chanter reed. As you build up our diaphragm muscles you can begin to uncork a drone as you build stamina and eventually progress to a harder chanter reed with all three drones going. It usually takes a year to build up your diaphragm, so don’t try to rush the blowing. Your goal is to play steady…steady drones and steady chanter . It’s called blowing tone.
