Heavy gauge or light gauge strings for electric geetar?
I play a lot of metal, like metallica, some slipknot and other drop tunings and such, so I was thinking of replacing the 3-year-old stock strings that came with my dad’s starter-kit guitar with some heavy gauge ones, since I heard they’re better for metal and produce a heavier tone, make it easier to drop tune etc. I told my dad and he said for an electric you always need a light gauge string if you want to play fast and do soloing and stuff. He’s got a point-what should I do?
The speed at which you can play the guitar depends on the strength and dexterity of your fingers. Heavier strings might take a couple of weeks to get used to but they won’t make you play any slower.
Heavier strings are better for non-standard tuning in which you tune the guitar down from standard tuning; they don’t go too slack when you tune down. If you were to tune above standard tuning you would need lighter strings so they can produce a higher note with less tension.
If you’ve had the same set of strings for 3 years then you will be suprised at the difference a new set of strings will make, you should really be replacing your strings as soon as they begin to fade (every few months at least).
You can buy extra heavy strings for electric guitar, there really isn’t a rule to how heavy your strings ’should’ be. Non-standrard tunings generally work better with the right set of strings but the most important factor is how it feels to play. If you like light strings, use them, if you like heavy strings, use them.
