Car Audio – Laptop headphone out to amplifier’s preamp inputs?
I want to be able to hook my laptop up to my car audio system temporarily so that I can use some EQ software to tweak the audio for my sub and make the bass levels of my MP3s sound better on the road.
My system consists of an Alpine CDE9845 cd / mp3 head unit, with a 12″ Rockford Fosgate P2 sub enclosure and a Profile HA700M amp in the trunk (amp specs here: http://www.vectoraudio.com/web/mdl/HA700M/detail.asp).
I need to know whether the current / voltage from my laptop’s headphone out jack is OK to pipe into my amplifier’s preamp inputs? Or should this be plugged into the amp’s speaker inputs instead? I’ve got a Y-connector with a 3.5mm headphone jack (to laptop) and two male RCA connectors (to amp).
d b: Actually I already have such a converter at home, would I be able to just put this inline between my laptop and the amp, so that the signal from the amp gets stepped down properly to what the preamp inputs need?
All you need to do is set the gain to the RMS volts of the laptops 1/8″ out. Just be sure to set the gain back to match the HU when you’re done testing. This is how I use my MP3 player for my system.
The purpose of the gain is to match the signal volts RMS of the source (CD player, etc.) to the input of the amp.

You’ll need Microsoft Excel, a multi-meter (AC volt meter) and a way to burn an audio CD from an MP3.
