Guitar Tabs
What happens when someone has guitar tabs on a website so musicians can learn to play your favorite songs? The publication is probably an infringement of copyright from publishers have licensed guitar very few sites tab. However, publishers are faced with questions even more pressing than whether to sue the unauthorized sites: What is the best business model to compete with the free sites, unauthorized, and contracts being published or to cover the necessary rights to make tags to approved sites?
The sale of printed versions of the guitar is a business cloud billionaire. Although the publisher revenue is confidential, a source with a print editor crunched some numbers for me on the basis of information from a NAMM report, the company's own revenues and estimate the revenue stream of competitors.
According to a report from NAMM, the North Market Print American music generated $ 539 million in retail sales in 2006. My source estimates that about 48% of that amount ($ 258,700,000) was related to songs in about 2.7 million songbooks. About 16% of the portion of the song was probably attributable to income guitar tabs, generating about U.S. $ 41.4 billion in retail revenues of 40 million individual guitar tabs. With the prices of wholesale typically 45% -50% of sale, print publishers probably received 18.6 million U.S. dollars-$ 20.7 million in 2006 from print guitar sheet music, then shared with the composers and their publishers.
At present, only three commercial guitar tab sites appear to be authorized by a large number of editors. Each sells cloud as digital sheet music: FreeHand Music (FreeHand Systems), and Musicnotes SheetMusicDirect (Hal Leonard and Music UK sales). Meanwhile, sites can Unlicensed contain labels continue to grow. In an attempt to compete with the free sites, Musicnotes acquired a site previously unlicensed MXTabs.net, with plans to license the site database of cards and add others, are offered for free and advertising revenue share with publishers. Among the publishers that license rights to the site were BMG Music Publishing, Famous Music, Peermusic errors.
But when Musicnotes made a deal with Harry Fox Agency in May to that publishers can choose the license agreement to MXTabs, Hal Leonard reacted negatively. Is sent by email to some publishers to urge them to think carefully before licensing "free" business model, which may include fans (ie not necessarily accurate) transcriptions of guitar songs. Musicnotes sent the letter and its response in the MXTabs site, which has not yet launched their service.
It is unclear whether the reaction site remains controversial. But the debate is unlikely to be resolved soon. It comes down to two questions: In light of all illegal landfills, where tabs are offering free advertising, Although sites are "free" can feed a consumer demand for more free music, so the devaluation of music? Or should legal action to close unauthorized sites and educational efforts that the strategy while for publishers to construction by downloading or using tabs?
