how do you control feed back on a guitar?
Is there a certain device you use? or what?
getting feed back to add charecter to music.
Ah, the next sonic youth perhaps?
You gotta play around with it. Feedback can differ greatly based on what type of guitar you are using, what type of amp, and what type of distortion.
There is really no certain device that you have to use to control feedback and turn it into something that “fits” into music.
A lot of times, it is easier to control the pitch of the feedback if you are physically holding the note of the pitch, or the 3rd or 5th for that matter. Just remember, un fretted strings will tend to feedback more than fretted string because there is less resistance to hamper the string from cycling. So you might have to mute other strings to keep unwanted noise from interrupting your wanted noise.
Also you can hold an entire chord of the root pitch you wish to feed back.
Unfortunately, because of bitchy neighbors, volume (or more correctly, massive amounts of gain) are needed to achieve the truly monstrous feedback you hear from bands like Sonic Youth, Nirvana and others. They all play on Tube amplifiers with very high gain, and use very saturated distortion on top of it. But there is one thing you can do to increase the volume of feedback.
Guitar maintenance.
New(er) strings and a properly set-up neck and bridge will do wonders for feedback. Remember the key rule to making feed back: More sustain=more feedback.
Ultimately, you and only you know the sounds you want to make. Just sit down and experiment. Adjust the closeness of your guitar pickups and the amp. Rotate yourself so to better align the magnetic fields created by both pickup and speaker (this also works for eliminating feedback). Experiment with setting on your amp–Kick up the gain if you can!) And play loud–It sounds better that way anyway!
