Fingerstyle guitar: Fingers or finger picks?
Which do you prefer when playing fingerstyle? I’m used to playing with my bare fingers all the time but I’ve been reading and observing (only through videos) that people when people use finger picks the sound of the guitar does sound “clearer” and louder and it gives it this rich timbre. Plus finger picks seem to give a sense of fluidity.
I got some plastic fingerpicks but they don’t fit me so I’ve been trying to use the Dunlop metal finger picks b/c I can shape them with pliers, but they are kind of uncomfortable. And when I try playing I keep hitting the wrong strings. It really doesn’t feel like an extension of my fingers like I imagined them to be.
But in the long run does it really matter whether one uses their own fingers or finger picks? Is it truly just a matter of preference? Or is there a major benefit with one over the other?
Help please.
I never use picks. I just learned that way and using a pick is very akward for me. But I know using just your fingers/nail, you get a alot cleaner sound, plus a way better tone. You don’t have that plastic scratching on your strings sound. Plus theres alot of cool things you can do just using your fingers.
Look up Mark Knopfler, he is the lead guitarist for a band called Dire Straits, which were big in the 70’s/80’s. He never ever used a pick and wrote some of the best solo’s known to man. “See Sultans of Swing solo”
Anyway its all a personal choice, if your a metal head, you will probably want to use a pick, but there are definetly benefits to learning to just use your fingers
