Which pickups for my guitar? Seymour Duncan vs. EMG?
Should i get seymour duncan blackouts? or stay with my “EMG-HZ” that came with my Zakk wylde custom les paul [epiphone]. Whats the difference ? whats pickups for what style? any info you can give me to help my choice?
Really?
EMG-HZ are some of the worst pickups that EMG makes. They’re passive, they come stock on a lot of guitars, are low-output, and they’re very poorly reviewed. If you have a good amp, you probably won’t notice their deficiencies, but that’s only until you compare them with something better.
SD Blackouts are like night and day – they’re high-output active pickups. They’re designed to sound like EMG 81/85’s, but with a fuller frequency response – more low end, specifically. They aren’t as compressed sounding, in my opinion, but that’s a good thing.
I bought my buddy a set of Blackouts for his birthday this year (because I’m a very good friend). Now, he’s been an EMG user for the entire time he’s played – at least a decade and a half. I mean real EMG’s, the actives, not their crappy passive pups. Anyways, he’s all about metal (esp thrash metal), and EMGs are what did it for him.
Slapped some Blackouts in his favorite guitar, he plugged in, and just like that, apparently I made an instant convert out of him. He likes the tone a lot better – gets a fuller, meatier sound out of his guitar, and that’s a good thing.
When we get together and jam, we do a little bit of this and a little bit of that, from metal to rock to jazz and blues even – he’s never had a problem switching back and forth between styles, so don’t think that active pickups are only for rock/metal… its all in how you use them. Yes, they’re bloody hot – learn how to use ‘em properly, and you can do just about anything with ‘em.
Anyways, they really worked out for him. I prefer passive pickups with an onboard preamp… like my current favorite pup combo, an SD Alternative 8 in the bridge and Alnico II Pro in the neck. Nice chunk, nice cleans, great Slash-y lead tones, plenty of that Alnico chime… so I keep the detail and dynamic range of my passives and I get the advantages of actives with a slightly hotter tone and no tone suckage.
