Mark Zonder talks about his recording studio
Some people, including a number of batteries need for a little distance between his life work and family life. But to master the progressive metal Mark Zonder , the gap is nonexistent, because your work area is located right in your home garage for two cars.
This is not any normal garage, however. It is also a comfortable studio, excellent full sound of major equipment. Of course, there are specially constructed walls and rooms, just sound-deadening material placed mainly on the door the main garage. (Yes, opening the door is still installed, but it has been offline for the moment.) Playback from recent recordings revealed Zonder your garage converted into study sounds great. "When we moved into this house, which was a no-brainer," says Mark, noting that the only changes made to the garage were adding lights and sound deadening. "Do not enter building a room within a room, because I'm not going to play at night."
Drummer day usually begins with a tendency to their children and then making cycling. (He is an avid cyclist, and his garage serves as a storage study Bicycle.) pm, Zonder is hard at work behind the kit or track mixer. "I play three or four hours a day," he says. "I I am one of those guys who has to play. With study and other efforts that I have, I have the luck that the day is mine. I can use my time to practice and record tracks others. "
While playing constantly, Zonder not see the need to accommodate various kits. In fact, his study has a simple drum setup workshop, with 20 "bass drum, 10" rack tom, and 14 "floor tom." Honestly, I'm not a collector, "says Mark." This is-this is what I use. I found that with the way DW builds their drums, the "zipper and 14" 10 plants are all I need. If I want anything else, I will get it electronically. I have another trick that I can use as well. "
Cymbals are a different story, as Zonder has a considerable pile of Zildjians on the list. "I had some of these dishes for a long time," he says. "And I got tired of having on the ground." The solution? Zonder picked up a tree plate on eBay. "It's unbelievable," he says. "I need another, actually."
Zonder used Steinberg products for recording, especially with Cubase and Nuendo software on your PC. While looking for some high quality plugins for your team, Mark became the Focusrite Liquid Mix 16. "I've been a man overboard staunch arts for many years, but the Focusrite compressors and EQs with left me completely, "he says." I will not be selling of external equipment, but they will work very well together. "Zonder is based on a number of external equipment to handle most of its signal processing, including Summit PPE-200 audio microphone preamps of the drums, Neve 33115s for the kick and snare, and Cal Rec PQ10s of the dishes. "The bills are through the Manley Dual Mono mic pre and ambient mics going through the Summits, and are both crushing through the compressor Distressor "says Mark.
Zonder not always engineer his own subjects. He leaves a lot to the job of designing award-winning Joe Marlett (Foo Fighters, Queens Of The Stone Age). "Joe says this is funky room where there is reflection of sound here and there, but it sounds freaking amazing, "Zonder says." It starts with a great mic. These are all tube microphones Lauten Audio. So it's a combination of microphones great, great stereo, and a great engineer. All microphones to go through an analog console. We are not using the tape, but the team is like a tape machine intensive. "
Although their study Zonder used primarily for monitoring of drums and recording voice-overs, has also recorded a complete set of musicians. But not everything fits into your workspace. guitar cabinets are usually placed in an adjacent room. "Take a couple of packing blankets, and it works beautifully," Mark says.
Lately, the drummer has focused on play its Slavior band practice materials Fates Warning, holding clinics and tracking drums for other artists. "What I'm offering people is albumquality tracks, "he explains." I give the individual files for each channel, and I give them a stereo mix. In this way you can get the sounds to which want them. My thing is to keep things in a very personal level. "
Zonder usually closes up shop around 5:30 PM "Then I become a mom again sir, "he says." We have a nice little setup here, and everything is going well. I can say that I do what I do and that is very important. "
