Drum Strainer
When I hit my rack toms on my drum set I find that the strainer on my snare drum is heard very loudly.?
Is this how it is on all sets or do I have a problem?
This is known as sympathetic vibration. No easy cure.
It depends on how you have your toms tuned, and what kind of snare, quality, and tunings, and finally snare wire type and adjustments. Never tape the bottom heads. I run Puresound wires on all my gear. They are the best value and sound IMO.
Usually if the snare is ok, the bottom head is way too loose. Crank that sucker up! Tight. No tighter than that. Keep going, ok that’s good. Really, tight.
The next culprit is the wires. To get a good sensitivity at low volumes in the wires (like for orchestra) you have to loosen the wires. This makes a great rock sound too. You just have to find a happy medium between loose and tight snare wires.
Top head muffling, I am not a fan. I will do it with a specific head, but I am usually running coated Remo ambassadors on all snares. I like external mufflers if you have to use them, but there are head combinations, tuning tricks, and other muffling items such as the ever mysterious moon-gel.
